The Department of Architectural Design is a graduate department, where students of the 3rd – 5th years of bachelor's degree, master's degree, and postgraduate students study. Diploma projects of NNGASU graduates in the field of architecture are traditionally awarded with high awards at International competitions for the best diploma projects in architecture, design and art.

The integral connection of the educational and scientific process with architectural practice is used as a main tool. Famous architects from Nizhny Novgorod work at the department. Students and master students of the department under the guidance of university teachers take an active part in the work of the architectural workshop of NNGASU. This allows them to delve into the design process and get not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical skills of real design during the training period.

The main discipline of the curriculum in the field of architecture is architectural design, the main courses of lectures: architecture of buildings and structures; contemporary architecture and design; modern problems of the history and theory of architecture, urban planning and design; fundamentals of the theory of architectural shaping; social fundamentals of architectural design.

The department offers doctoral and postgraduate courses in the fields of Theory and History of Architecture, Restoration and Reconstruction of Historical and Architectural Heritage, Architecture of Buildings and Structures. Creative concepts of architectural activity. Dissertations are defended in the Dissertation Council, which is chaired by Gelfond A. L., Doctor of Architecture, Professor, Corresponding Member of the RAASN. The Council unites prominent scientists of the Volga Federal District and their students around the NNGASU School of Architecture.

The department conducts training according to the All-European step-by-step system of architectural education. This allows to realize an active scientific and methodological international cooperation at different levels of the education – with the Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy), the Higher School of Architecture of Grenoble (France), the University of Zuid (the Netherlands).
